Dithering quality will be affected by the assumed monitor gamma (I
believe). I just attempted to calibrate mine, and still found banding in
this image though.
Most monitors ought to have a gamma of roughly 2.2 (or calibrated to
that), unless you happen to have a (older?) Mac - then its 1.8.

Agree with huug however ,well in my opinion it is better but not fixed. Still
got faint green curves.

it just enough so that the gradients are a bit more different, or this

Yeah, and concerning the bug 276017, as brightness level is maximum at Ubuntu
start, this banding is even more visible and ugly.

I suspect its the default backgrounds themselves actually. if you go to
/usr/share/images/xsplash and open up the background for your
resolution, you can then check the image in full screen (by hitting
f11). I noticed that the full screen image for my resolution was not the
best of quality even wit
I looked at many wallpapers etc. in which colours changes smoothly and I
see no banding. I really think it's just a broken image.

It's not only about the resolution. Your 2560x1024 may be not typical

I see banding too.
I have a dual monitor setup with twinview, xsplash displays correctly on only
one screen and then I see no banding.
However, gdm uses the same background stretched over two screens, and then I
see banding. This is caused by the fact that there is no image for my
