Public bug reported:

I installed Xubuntu Karmic BETA on the laptop. The installation went
perfectly. The system is usable after installation, no problems. I can
install new packages and do pretty much everything. Reboot after reboot
and it works. BUT if I do a dist-upgrade and reboot the problems begin.

BETA works.
Updating the system, this is what happens when I reboot:
1) System boots up normally, I get the new XSplash and all (very nice)
2) System is responsive, I can see system notifications about AC power every
once in a while
3) IF I move the mouse over some icons, or hover on the menu or open a menu -->
I get ~5 seconds to live --> total lockdown

Only the mouse pointer still works. But anything other than that does
not. I can't even do CTRL + ALT + Fx. The system doesn't simply respond.

I did the installation couple of times. I tried to isolate the problem
but I couldn't. Something uploaded after the BETA release causes this...

System specs:
Asus AB600L
Intel Celeron M
256Mb RAM
Intel 8xx integrated graphics
WLAN (tried with and without the suggested propriety driver)
40Gb HDD
