Public bug reported: [needs-packaging] Smart Package Manager.
Smartpm seems like a great and promising project which has the potential to build on and contribute to the standardization that Packagekit brings. Unless the wiki has not been updated in a while, the project has also been funded by Canonical since September 2005(which is obviously known). The reason i ask for this to be included is because there are already a few Distros out there like Masonux that use the underlying Ubuntu system with the LXDE and maybe Xfce desktops. Ubuntu is currently working on its own official spinoff of LXDE too and i was thinking about what Ubuntu can do to make their version stand out from the rest. One of the biggest things i could think of was to use Smartpm instead of APT. From what i can tell Smart is more light weight than APT which already makes it a good candidate. The Packagekit backend is already available too. So the only thing needed would be to create a GUI for Packagekit which could be a universal one for both the LXDE and Xfce desktops. But it can also be used without PK. I'm sure Gustavo Niemeyer and Michael Vogt along with the other contributors have put a lot of work into this project and as of late it seems development has slowed. It would be a shame to see this project go down. This might encourage other Distros to use it for their light weight spinoffs too and maybe even other projects like Spri and Crunchbang to start using it. I know it was considered by Mandriva when the project started and was funded by Conectiva before Canonical, so who knows, maybe they might even consider it again for their main project.
