I had this same issue and same solution.
I believe it was caused by using etckeeper to restore files in /etc
(including /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow).

I have a similar problem since today (Feisty up-to-date, recently update
of gnome-screensaver).
When the screen is locked (for example if I close my laptop and open it)
I can't unlock the session. I enter my password, but then the system
hangs up a little time (maybe one minute) and then it asks
Maybe reopen the bug?
