I have the same problem on my Acer Aspire One 110 running Ubuntu Netbook Remix
10.04
None of the card readers (the standard or the storage expansion) detect cards
unless you insert them before boot.
Sergio's workaround solve the problem.

Hi Sergio,
This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it
recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the
latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .
If it remains
I solved temporally like this:
I modified /etc/default/grub on line
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=”quiet splash”
and replace it for:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=”quiet splash pciehp.pciehp_force=1″
after that I type:
sudo update-grub
and finally reboot, and works.
