Binary package hint: virtualbox-ose
I used to use VirtualBox 2.1.4 in Ubuntu 9.04 64-bit to run Windows XP
64-bit as a guest. Sound playback and recording used to work flawlessly,
enabling me to use chat programs such as GoogleTalk for voice chatting.
For some reason, I had to remove Windows XP 64-bit, and install Windows
XP 32-bit. At the same time, I also updated to VirtualBox 3.0.6. Since
then, I have not been able to record sound on the Windows guest through
the OSS driver. Sound recording using PulseAudio or ALSA is not proper.
I assumed it was something to do with the 32-bit Guest OS trying to use
an emulated driver based on the 64-bit OSS libraries. I decided to
install the 32-bit Ubuntu 9.10 Beta.
However, this did not solve my problem.
Currently, I have tried many different versions of Windows guests on
VirtualBox 3.0.8 in the Karmic Beta. In each of these, sound playback
and recording is scratchy or otherwise flawed when I use PulseAudio or
ALSA. Using OSS, sound playback is perfect, but recording doesn't work.
It records just silence.
Is this a regression on the VirtualBox upgrade from bersion 2.1.4 to
3.0.8? Or has it something to do with Ubuntu 9.10?
If I am unable to solve this problem, I will have to install a dual boot
with Windows in order to use voice chatting software, which will be
quite stupid because it used to work earlier.
