mythtv-status 0.9.2-3 from lucid fixes the problem for me. It should
perhaps be backported to karmic.

The only issue is that Ubuntu how has a different way of updating the
MOTD than in Debian.

messes up with "motd" (message of the day function")
I jaunty, I had upgrades-needed + mythtv status + my own message - now I only
have my own message...
