This should be fixed by now, --debug will still install package (you
need --dry-run if you don't want that). That it will look at all origins
(i.e. -securiy and -updates should work just fine).

This is a bug in the way --debug works in before hardy. Debug was really
only a debug thing, it would only run dpkg without actually installing
anything. I'm sorry for the confusion. For karmic this got fixed by
adding a --dry-run option and --debug will install (as
