Same problem with Edgy Eft.
The disable screensaver option in mplayer gui / misc menu doesn't work.
Aftr wandering around the Net, it seems that mplayer disables xscreensaver but
doesn't know about gnome-screensaver AND gnome-power-manager.
Here is a limited solution :
I'd rather say mplayer fails to disable DPMS feature, which suspends
monitor after 30 minutes (in your case). I have similar problem, Ubuntu
6.06.

I managed to solve it somehow.
As I found out later, it was necessary to change System - Preferences
- Power Managment - Put display to sleep... (and move the slider to
the never position).
It'd be good to have it in one place someday.
