Mr Steve Langasek, Forgive, my tardiness but I did a backup and recently installed Windows 7 and Ubuntu Karmic Stable. Though, no the problem I could boot from Windows Vista back into Windows Vista without the error boot screen popping up. It only happened if I went from Ubuntu to Windows.

Nastrafireblaze, Is this problem reproducible if you reboot rom Windows back into Windows, without booting first into Ubuntu? If so, then given that grub2 shouldn't be writing to the filesystem (as Colin mentions), it would seem to be a problem with Windows itself rather than the interaction

I did manage to capture the issue, but the solution I normally used (ie mounting Windows partition in Ubuntu) did not rectify the problem for some reason. It's a bit long on running time but I tried to minimize the amount of recording by not recording long processes, which is why its broken down

For what it's worth, GRUB deliberately has no filesystem writing code, in order to avoid this class of problem. It sounds more likely that the problem resides elsewhere, although I can't say I know where. I don't boot my Windows installation very often, but I also don't automatically mount it and

Well, if anyone can advise on any logs, config files, or additonal documentation needed? It's not an issue for me as I have made a marked drop in to how much boot into my Windows nowadays also, but I'm sure it may be an issue for non-fully transitioned new user to ubuntu or it could be an issue if

Do I understand correctly that Windows will only boot cleanly if you *do* mount the partition under Ubuntu? This sounds more like Windows isn't cleanly shutting down, and Ubuntu is handling the filesystem recovery on mount? ** Package changed: grub (Ubuntu) = grub2 (Ubuntu) -- KARMIC Grub
