I have something similar. I'm running amd64 and both on up-to-date
feisty as on up-to-date gutsy my system hangs upon leaving X, either to
logoff or to shutdown or to reboot. Running on a laptop nx7400 with
intel gfx card (945gm)

Logging out X hangs system
I had the same problem on an AMD64 (Feisty Final) system wit an ATI
Radeon Xpress 200M with xorg-driver-fglrx (7.1.0-8.34.8+2.6.20.5-15.20).
Changig the user or logging out killed my machine. The only way to
change the user was to kill X with Strg + Alt + Backspace.
After installing the newest
Reassigning to linux-restricted-modules.

Also is xorg-driver-ati + fgrlx that you've tried both or that you're
using just fglrx? Fglrx has had such hanging problems with amd64, and
it's not related to the xserver-xorg-video-ati driver.

Thanks for your report. Do you have another computer on the network
that you can check to see if your machine is still pingable? Can you
ssh into the hung machine?
