My IBM Thinkpad X40 has model 2372KG5. I could not reproduce this issue
when I booted Lucid beta 1 from DVD:

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it
recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the
latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

Forgot about this as I switched to Sidux but I found out that the
display was not really off but only the backlight didn't get turned on
again when coming back from suspend. At first I didn't notice but when I
tried it in a bright environment there was definitely a picture on the
screen. So my prob
Same error occurs on my XPS m140. I'll close the lid for just a second
and once the screen shuts off it no longer resumes causing me to reboot.

Same problem in here. After closing laptop lid and reopening it, it
sometimes flashes briefly but then goes completely blank. I'm also
running Thinkpad but mine one is X41.
I also get during boot time following messages:

Just noticed that the problem is not solely suspend related. Also when I
close the lid of the ThinkPad and the display gets turned off it doesn't
come back on when i reopen the lid. Unlike after a resume this can be
resolved with switching to a VT and than back to X though.
