Steps to reproduce:
1. open F-spot
2. open preferences and set prefered photo dir
3a. close f-spot
b import some pics
4a take a look at the dir you've choosen, you'll see a new subdir called
photos

what do you mean by isn't it upstream there? how do you import the
photos since you close f-spot too?

Not confirming the issue on a karmic livecd image:
- create a directory
- configure f-spot to use this directory
- import photos from an another directory
the images are copied in the selected directory with year, month, day
subdirs
