release of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

Also, if it's any help, when I talk into the mic, I can hear myself in
the speakers, and playing with the front mic boost in `alsamixer` causes
my speakers to screech. I just can't hear anything else like I normally
should be able to.

I ran `sudo update-grub`, and it looked like it updated everything, but
I still have no sound. Any ideas?

Yes, I solved it with new kernel, btw. sudo update-grup doesn't upgrade
my menu.lst so i did it by myself

Please make sure that your grub menu lists the Karmic kernels
(2.6.31-14-generic). You presently seem to be running the Jaunty
kernel. Please run "sudo update-grub" and reboot into the Karmic
kernel.
