Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdebase-workspace

There are several issues:
- Starting KDE after upgrading to Karmic with a monitor attached to a laptop
shows clones on both monitors, neither in the native resolution. I had it set
up to show them side-by-side before the upgrade.
- Starting the display section of the KDE settings manager (probably) crashes
compiz, all effects are gone. Both monitors are switched to their native
resolution, but the desktop doesn't fit in anymore (areas out of view).
- The manager tells me I don't seem to have a configuration that allows to
setup multi monitors.
- I can only setup side-by-side using ARandR.
- But this setup (by ARandR) is not remembered on the next boot.
