There is little than can be done here, unless libtxc will be packaged (bug
#402920). A spring developer already complained about this on mesa mailing list
some time ago:

Note that the game already suggest package libtxc-dxtn0 which will fully
implement S3TC. That package is not in Ubuntu however, see bug #402920.

I had the same problem but it was fixed by enableing S3 Texture Compression.
You can use driconf for this. There's a post in Ubuntuusers forum (german)
