SRU verification for Karmic: I have reproduced the problem with backintime 0.9.26-3 in karmic and have verified that the version of backintime 0.9.26-3ubuntu0.1 in -proposed fixes the issue. I've also verified that backintime runs as root when launched from the menu to launch it as root.
