Public bug reported:

In: Karmic Koala latest packages as of today.

Expected to happen: Upon selecting digital audio out in Sound
Preferences > Hardware > Profile, for it to start outputting audio.

What happened instead: No audio due to the master alsamixer channel
being muted, possibly the fault of an incorrectly configured pulseaudio
profile?

Details:
Have a motherboard with integrated Intel HDA using the Realtek ALC889A chipset.
Using the new sound preferences which controls PulseAudio, upon switching the
profile to any of the "Digital Stereo Duplex (IEC958)" (no surround available,
which is a different problem), even though that will automatically switch on
optical out which is good, the master channel becomes muted in alsamixer and
has to be unmuted for sound to work.

In other words, for a user, at least on my machine, to get digital sound
working, they have to either install the Gnome Alsa Mixer GUI, or use
alsamixer on the command line, and unmute the master channel audio.

Strangely, none of the other switches or sliders in the ALSA mixer does
anything whatsoever. Adjusting the volume of that same master channel
for instance does nothing. Nothing at all in there controls my audio
except for that one mute switch for the master channel, which is pretty
silly and strange.

Also, I've had it happen to where this got re-muted somehow, not sure
what I did as changing it to something else then back doesn't re-mute
it. I think it may have been through system updates.

Sounds like a PulseAudio configuration bug I guess.
