This appears to be a bug in usb-creator.exe that was included on the
disk. I built the usb drive again under linux using the same file and it
worked. (except for another bug that was with the but the broadcom
wifi and the restricted drivers )

used usb-creator.exe from windows to burn to drive D: -- the Kensington.
If I press esc while the kubuntu loader is up it shows me the initramfs
screen, which makes me think that usb-creator is broken, because it probably
didn't update the references in the configuration file correctly.
