@Steffen, while turning Compiz off stopped the flicker, I still doubt
this is a compiz problem. Could you test the nouveau drivers with
Compiz? You could also try out the most recent NVidia drivers now
available.
@oranges, I am glad that worked for you.

Alright. It worked on the other computers as well.

It might just be my subjective impression but it seems that the issue got
slightly better with the regular updates. Though it becoming better it's still
far from being fixed so I ultimately decided to turn compiz effects off.
Seems to be a real tricky issue as this happens in different
@Weather: Alright, I will do as you recommended. Any tipps what to post
with that bug report? Any log or xorg file or something?
@Steffen: Turning off Compiz works for you? I have this even if I have
Compiz off. It's really strange. Has someone tried updating to the
newest 195 Beta drivers from
Just wanted to let you guys know. I installed the newest 195 Beta
drivers from the Nvidia page. I followed the this guide -
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=990978 and uninstalled the 180
drivers first. It actually works. The screen flickering is gone. I have
been using this for like 25min
PS: I will be testing this on two other machines that had this problem
and report back. It should do the trick though. Please post if you have
success with this. At least we know for sure what it was then.

[Jaunty,Karmic] screen flickers black randomly with nvidia 185driver and
Hey guys, I have the same problem. I have been looking everywhere for an
answer - this is very annoying! It is happening on my laptop, as soon as
it gets hooked up (via VGA-OUT) to my external LCD. It flickers for 1/10
of a second e v e r y few seconds, making the system unusable. It's
disturbing
BTW: This happens at random all the time ( for me ). The only time this
does not happen is when watching a video/movie. This doesn't happen when
using the internal/built in laptop lcd - only when plugging in and using
the external lcd via vga-out.

oranges, because video issues are very tricky to deal with, it is
probably best to file a new bug report with all the details of your
system. Feel free to mention that your bug might be similar to this
one, as that will help us out. Also, feel free to subscribe me to your
report, and I can help
This happened to me too, on my old laptop, a Dell Latitude D820 with an
NVidia Quadro NVS120M video card, but as far as I can remember, it
happened to me after disabling compiz too, so it's likely an NVidia bug,
so the ubuntu bug list might not be the best place to report it...

This is likely the same as a known bug related to some work being done
to the kernel. The flickers are not really reproducible and varies from
hardware to hardware. Just make sure that the system gets updated
because this problem is related to the video drivers. Various
manufacturers are slowly
Hi evfool, in my case flickering doesn't appear when compiz is turned off.
Theres also no flickering in 3D-games (like sauerbraten or nexuiz)
Weathergod:
Yep, flickers are not reproducible although it seemed to be better when using
the previous nvidia 173 drivers.

Steffen,
Updates to the proprietary nvidia drivers will help. Also, updates to
the kernel will also help. On my Fedora 11 system (no compiz), the
flickers happened fairly frequently (a few times a day), but over the
summer, it reduced to at most once a week and there was no upgrade to
