Public bug reported:

There have been numerous reports of this bug in Ubuntu 9.10 upgrades and
installs.

The 2 specific symptoms I am addressing are:

1) No sound, even though with the correct sound card drivers installed

2) The Volume Control tool-tip says "Dummy Output"

Under System, Administration, Hardware Drivers, see if there is a Modem
Driver installed. If there is, remove it, reboot and see if your sound
comes back. The The Volume Control tool-tip should say something like
"Internal Audio Analog Stereo."

NOTE: Ubuntu 9.04 had NO problem with the Modem Driver being installed.

So there is a bug in Ubuntu 9.10 with Modem Drivers. Could be the driver
OR Ubuntu.
