Unfortunately, shortly after I reported this issue I had a system crash
resulting in the loss of this installation. I have installed and been
running Ubuntu 9.10 with out issue, but don't know if it uses the same
archive.

archive. Please execute the following commands, as it will clear your
package cache, in a terminal ( Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal )
:
sudo apt-get c
