I've got a very similar problem and follwed your last advice. But when
trying to follow step 2) gksu tries to open, but closes before I can
even see anything.
Any other advice?

I belive that Something is wrong with your sources.Try new sources.
Rename existing sources.list file and create new.
1) Open a Terminal and enter the following commands:
cd /etc/apt
sudo mv sources.list sources.list.bak
2 )Press Alt+F2 and type this command:
gksu gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
Alright, I tried all that, and nothing's changed.
This is the terminal results:

mkdir: cannot create directory `/var/lib/apt/lists/partial': File exists
