I think I have run into this bug with the 185 driver.
I got this problem once or twice since upgrading to Karmic.
When I eventually was able to Ctrl+Alt+F1 and run top I could not see
any specific process hogging the system even though the hogging
continued at that time.

It would be helpful if you could attach a listing to this bug of the
top output when your desktop goes unresponsive.

Well, that was quick. It just froze again. And this time with 100% cpu

I was able to log in from another computer using ssh. That's how I got the top
log.
On the frozen computer, all I could do was to move the mouse pointer. No
response from keyboard whatsoever.
However, over ssh
I think it is unlikely to be the hardware at this stage. Here is a link:

describes troubleshooting procedures for high X loads. Could you please
try the first procedure, i.e. killing processes one by one to see if one

It seems that nvidia noticed there was a bug in their driver. The
website defaults back to 185.18.36 now, so they must have pulled 190.42
until they get the bug fixed.

I updated my location in my profile, so hopefully that makes
communication easier. Thanks for pointing that out!
When you mentioned X-Windows, it made me think that maybe Compiz was the
problem. The thing is, I run Compiz on my desktop, but I have
compositing disabled on my MythTV box in order
Something that would be worth trying on your desktop machine once you
have established that the 185.18.36 driver is stable in your
environment, would be to put the new Nvidia driver on and then disable
Compiz. This would give us an indication of whether the new driver is
likely to be the sole
Agreed. I'll reinstall 190.42 on my desktop later this week or over the
weekend so I can get that info.

On the surface, this looks as if it might be a problem somewhere in
X-Windows or the software that sits on top. The first step would be to
capture the last ~200 lines or so of ~/.xsession-errors and post it
here.
The next step is to capture some information about what is happening
