This bug report has been inactive for quite some time and in the meantime Ubuntu has moved along. I hope the reported problem has been resolved in the current version of Ubuntu. Ok, I found something out: I first experienced this bug on LXDE. I rotate my screen to tablet mode and the desktop switches but it takes a short while until the kicker and wallpaper have been rearranged. If I rotate back before that X crashes - if I wait it works. On KDE this works much faster -
