Ubuntu 9.10 server on old Dell Dimensions desktop with 128 MB RAM, the
freeze occurs and is corrected as reported above. The bug can not be
with xorg, as I have no x server installed. . .

@connorp, Are you using GRUB or GRUB2? Do you know?
You can tell by checking to see if you have a file in /boot/grub called
menu.list. If you do, you grub GRUB. If you don't, you have GRUB2.

I have been seeing exactly this issue on my 9.10 ubuntu headless server.
Being somewhat new to the Linux world, what exactly do I do with
"nomodeset" ? I have figured out as much from my Googling that it has
something to do with grub, but after that I am stumped for where to go
from here. Your help
