That fixed it, thank you so much! Specifically, although it didn't work
after muting 'Line Jack Sense' alone, it did work after muting 'External
Amplifier'.

amixer set 'Line Jack Sense' mute
If sound remains inaudible, please also try muting 'External Amplifier':
amixer set 'External Amplifier' mute
