Just in case someone is interested. The bug is related to KMS and is still
present in all recent Ubuntu versions (actually, in all recent kernels too, as
it affects i915 module)
The good thing is that people are trying to fix it upstream:

Thanks for reporting this bug and any supporting documentation. It is
good to have very clear information. There is no need at this time to
attach anything else.
Since this bug has enough information provided for a developer to begin
work, I'm going to mark it as confirmed and let them handle it f

"The problem" now just means "broken without i915.modeset=0". In other
words, the problem is really with video, not with power management.
Suspend/resume works fine if i915.modeset=0 is given at startup.
Given that, do you still want ACPI and DMI dumps?

Volume/mute are working for me - a small blue volume bar is overlaid
across the bottom of the screen (not that I actually use these buttons,
I hadn't even tried them before)
I don't think I have any thinkpad-specific packages installed, but there
is a kernel module:
$ lsmod | grep -i think

Thank you.
Both xorg.conf files are working for me and reveal stable operation. I tried to
compare graphical performance by glxgears and got this result:
my Tomas's xorg.conf: more then 1000 frames in 5 s
Brian's xorg.conf: more then 500 frames in 5 s
One more question. What about extra buttons f
Here is my xorg.conf - it is possibly suboptimal or some settings may be
unnecessary, but my machine is stable.

Same problems occurred on my IBM ThinkPad X30, now running Xubuntu

Without adding "i915.modeset=0" to the kernel command line, all my

Login into Xfce was possible. Suspending and hibernating (after

Update: I have solved the Fn-F4 sleep problem (after wasting a lot of
time hacking acpi scripts to see what was going on)
In the end the solution was just to run /usr/bin/xfce4-power-manager-
settings, and change the setting for "When the sleep button is pressed"
from "nothing" to "suspend".
