I'm not sure what mutter --replace does, but

suggests that you use gnome-shell --replace. Also, changes are often
because the packages are compiled against git. Could you update the
packages and see if the problem
Also happens if using gnome-shell, the wallpaper is then replaced by a
solid blue.
