I'm sorry to hear Ubuntu One isn't working properly for you. In order to
help better determine what the problem might be, can you answer the
following questions:
1) Are you using NetworkManager?
2) Are you behind a proxy server?
3) Can you report back what the following steps report?

2) No (but I am behind a firewall)
3) If CouchDB is already started, nothing at all, even if I use the applet to
disconnect/connect. If CouchDB is not started, the initialization log

Fortunately, I think there is a workaround for this problem as I believe
it's related to bug 455544 which occurs when the bandwidth preferences

If you are receiving the same errors as the original reporter, then you
need to delete the config file noted in the comment above and also make
sure you're not trying to run the client as root
