The problem is actually a timeout with a call to a large active
directory environment. I see this "sometimes" on a RHEL5 implementation,
but other times the issue isn't there.
Same thing with wbinfo failing "sometimes"

I can confirm this issue still occurs in Hardy. I just upgraded the
servers at my company the other day, and the same errors still occur
with the new versions.

I have stopped using winbind for my Enterprises groups in nsswitch, and have
taken a slightly different path.
It still occurs for my "domain users" gid, and I am using
/etc/security/group.conf for local group membership stuff.

There are two solutions for this problem:
1. . Enable anonymous searches on your Active Directory
2. . Insert an administrator DN and password into /etc/ldap.conf
