Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: synaptic

This is on a fresh install of Karmic and fully updated. Synaptic is
version 0.62.7ubuntu6

I've seen similar bugs reported for older versions, but in my case,
update-apt-xapian-index did not resolve the issue.

Typing a package name in quicksearch only finds installed packages, but
does not display available packages for me to install. Even doing a
regular search for mplayer returns nothing, although I can clearly see
it in the package list with no search if I scroll all the way down to
find it.

Obviously the software center is where I should go to install a full
program like that, but synaptic functionality is still needed for
finding obscure decencies and dev packages from time to time.

** Affects: synaptic (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
