Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-volume-manager

Laptop Model: HP 6730b
Ubuntu release: 9.10 Karmic Koala

Usually when I press the Mute button the volume is expected to be muted,
until I press the button again to unmute. Pressing the button to Mute
mode, the button color changes to orange and to unmute the button
changes to blue color.

However, when muted, after roughly about 5 minutes the button changes to
blue color(i.e. unmutes) and volume is on again. Meanwhile the volume
icon next to the system time does not change appearance.

Tested this several times on another same laptop model and could
reproduce this issue.
