Turns out the problem was unrelated to the upgrade -- one of the memory modules in the laptop went bad, and it chose that boot to manifest itself. Pulling the problem memory allows the system to work properly again. This is common enough that there's a FAQ for it on the HP support site. -- Afte

Zach, thank you for taking the time to report this bug. In order to understand your issue better, could you please include the files that are in your /var/log/dist-upgrade directory. You can get to it by booting up using a LiveCD version of Ubuntu (be sure not to confuse the LiveCD's /var/log dir
