Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xubuntu-artwork
1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd' or System -> About Ubuntu. "lsb_release -rd" output: Description: Ubuntu 9.10 Release: 9.10 (This is Xubuntu) 2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy packagename' or by checking in Synaptic. "apt-cache policy" output: usplash-theme-xubuntu: Installed: 0.38 Candidate: 0.38 Version table: *** 0.38 0 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com karmic/universe Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status 3) What you expected to happen 1. Boot computer 2. Splash screen appears with progress bar that shows how far along the boot process is. 4) What happened instead 1. Boot computer 2. Splash screen appears with glowing Xfce mouse mascot, but no progress bar. Nothing happens for several seconds, making it appear like the system is hung. After an indefinite amount of time, the login screen appears. I tried installing a couple of other usplash themes (usplash-theme- sabily and usplash-theme-taibah), and they have a progress bar. The default splash screen for Xubuntu 9.04 also had a progress bar, but that disappeared when I upgraded to 9.10. If there was a design decision to remove the progress bar, please consider adding it back, because it really does seem like the system is hung when there is nothing happening during the boot progress.
