Thanks for reporting this Bug. It is reproducible with latest stable
version of Pidgin and GTK running on Ubuntu 9.10. This bug also appear
on other GTK Based applications and will be upstreamed to the GTK Bug
Tracking System inmediatly.

I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 with latest updates. Right now this is happening
only in Pidgin (2.6.3-1ubuntu1~pidgin1.9.10), and has been happening
since early versions of Pidgin in Ubuntu 8.04, 8.10, 9.04.
Earlier, there were same problems with "Save as" windows, if the path
was too long, but it is fix
Could you add the screenshot to the bug too rather than using an another
website there?
