That's fine with me (about not merging two applications).
I would just set default font sizes a bit smaller, like 9 or 10 points.
This would help in netbooks and those meager 1366x768 screens every
laptop maker is doing nowadays.

Ubuntu Interface too big...
I forgot in my last post that by meager 1366x768 screens, I mean that
the height is insufficient.
Some coworkers of mine have purchased recent laptops with these screens,
and web browsing (and specially word processing) suffer: you can't see
enough of the web page or text document on screen,
your suggestion merging two application is not a simple task and many
people that I know say that they find ubuntu's fonts cooler
