Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

After returning from suspend gnome-screensaver presents me with the
login dialog box. I dutifully type in my password and if all goes well
the dialog will say "checking.." for about 1 second and then log in me.

Very infrequently after typing my password the dialog will hang at the
point it says "checking..". I have let it sit there for at most 10
minutes so I'm pretty sure its not just loading something slowly.

At this point I have two options:
1. goto TTY1 using ctrl-alt-f1 and press ctl-alt-del to force the system to
restart cleanly.
2. use another computer on the lan, ssh to my laptop, then do 'pkill
gnome-screensaver'. Once the screensaver dies it will automatically restart at
which point I have to use the login dialog box again and can usually
successfully login.
