gnome-panel is not maintained by Gnome anymore, but this could apply for other desktop environments as well. I don't think this is feasible. A good UI font should have the same width in its numerals, so things like the clock don't jump around. While this is true for the fonts Ubuntu has used by

I'm not sure if a screenshot will make the error obvious. Its more of an animated error. You can see it on your computer easily with these settings. set clock to show seconds. then change a font or two System-Preferences-Appearances-Fonts Application Font : Persia Medium 10 Fixed Width Font :
