And to make Michael Chapman's workaround effective at every boot-up,
just add the command (without sudo) to the /etc/rc.local directory. You
will need root privilages however to edit this directory.
For further info, #6 does not work on my Acer 5732Z..there is no need
for the nomodeset or i8042.no

works here. I'm also using a 5732Z with Ubuntu Lucid installed.

I found a workaround for this. I have Lucid Lynx Ubuntu on a 5732 Z
with Intel Mobile 4 Series Chipset. Use 'lspci | grep VGA' to get your
device address. Mine is '00:02.0' Then call 'sudo setpci -s 00:02.0
F4.B=XX' where XX is a hexadecimal byte. In my case, '00' is full
brightness and 'FF' i

brightness seems to work reverse, but at least now i can work without

I've got this same problem on my acer 5732z. Particulary solution is
boot system with acpi_osi="linux". I can change a level of backlight,
but it works "weird". If i set on keyboard 90% backlight, system set
10%. So it works, but reverse. Additionaly i cannot set level of
backlight from gnome - i c
