It sounds like the EDID was being incorrectly cached across reconnection
events. This definitely shouldn't happen on recent kernels, so please do

Here a third person seeing this same behaviour. My default external
monitor is 1280x1024 and when a switch to use projectors and then come
back to the default monitor, I can only choose a max resolution of
1024x768. In the end, this means that I have to reboot to get my
external monitor to work aga
I can confirm this bug in lucid with the same behavior.
I confirm also that restarting X doesnt trigger xrandr to re-poll for the new
monitor.

I have some additional data about this bug.
Just restarting X doesn't trigger xrandr to re-poll for the new monitor.
I have to reboot before I can connect to a new external monitor.
I also found a ton of these lines in my /var/log/messages:
