Correction, no, the scanner just makes a noise when initialized when I
open xsane, but it can't preview or scan.

Yes, I have /etc/sane.d/plustek.conf.
I have not changed this.
I understand that I could probably have got this to work by adding the vendor
and device id to plustek.conf. Instead I got it to work by adding a file
/etc/sane.d/canon650u with the contents:
