Hi Jean---
Scott killed the problem during Karmic development--it was a "stuck"
update problem---post #4 & #5 from Scott were the problem & fix. Just
another development bug..I would think you can close this one.

I can' reproduce the problem neither in Karmic or Jaunty. I installed
only python2.6 and python-psyco and python-psyco installs cleanly and is
usable.
However there is the following odd thing in your log file, the version of
python-minimal and libpython2.6 doesn't match:

Anyone who can test the proposed package? If not, the proposed update

Uploaded proposed packages for karmic and jaunty proposed. While the
odds of getting verification for Jaunty may not be great, it seems poor
form not to provide the extension for the default Python and it's easy
enough to verify.

I have found a workaround for this problem---I had only Python 2.6
installed---I installed Python 2.5 & all the problems were resolved---
for some reason 2.6 is not including the "os" module...
