No, I haven't been behind a firewall, I was able to access the archive
from a web browser all the time, but update didn't work.
Unfortunately, I cannot be of more help now. I had to use my machine
and install besides updates new software, so I decided to remove Ubuntu
and go for Suse 11.2.
