If nm fails to connect, is there any way to get it to preserve the old key?
1. Sorry I don't remember. Having to re-enter a key would have been
inconvenient too. I use the full length WEP key.

Unfortunately, this is the way NM works. If it fails to make a
connection to a secure AP, it assumes that the key was bad, and forces
the user to re-enter the key. From your description, I'm not sure that
happened...
