Well, there's certainly overramping done:
Node 0x16 [Audio Mixer] wcaps 0x20050b: Stereo Amp-In
Amp-In caps: ofs=0x17, nsteps=0x1f, stepsize=0x05, mute=1
so nsteps needs to be fixed to the offset.
More importantly, check your mixer levels. On VIA HDA, you need to check
'Master Front' and 'Inde

The previous kernel audio works, signature is "Ubuntu 2.6.31-16.53-generic"
The new one which has the problem is "Ubuntu 2.6.31-17.54-generic"

Hi Dario,
If you boot back into the previous kernel does sound again work as
expected? if so, can you specify which kernel version it is so that we
can narrow down the possible window of regression. You can find the
version of the kernel you are running by the output of
/cat/proc_versionsignatur
