It seems that the issue only exist in OpenOffice.org for Linux. The
attached screenshot shows the rendering in OO.o (foreground) and MS Word
(background). While slight different, the non spacing chars are well
rendered.
Could it be a Freetype issue?

Sorry for the bad phrasing: there are several Garamond-based fonts
available, see for example
http://www.fonts.com/AboutFonts/Articles/IlluminatingLetters/Garamond.h
As you can see, the non printing chars rendering in Abiword works fine.
