I took filehighlight.ini from sources as a quick fix for the
highlighting issue (apt-get source mc; sudo cp
mc-4.7.0/misc/filehighlight.ini /etc/mc).
As for thicker borders, you can try mc skins (for example mc -S
featured or mc -S double-lines) - it works for me.

Most of them are solved in the debian version which is now in testing
(3:4.7.0.1-1).
Would it be possible to sync the ubuntu package before lucid release?
