I tried a backported pulseaudio that includes rtkit and the issue still there.
I will try with the Lucid alpha 2 and see if that happens.

Backporting pulseaudio rtkit to Karmic won't help - it relies on a
kernel feature not present in 2.6.31. I'm not familiar with fofix, what
kind of buffer size are you talking about? I also see you have modified
/etc/pulse/daemon.conf to have a different default-fragment-size-msec,
does that

Lucid has rtkit, which makes difference in the way pulseaudio is
scheduled. Do you know if this is present under current Lucid as well?
