have you tried installing poppler-data ? if that fixes it then this is a
dupe of Bug #616321

I have the same problem with portuguese characters.
This is especially annoying when you trying to copy text from a pdf file and
paste it into another document.
The normal characters appear in a line, and the special characters in a
different line.
Maybe it is something related with these old pr
poppler issue and likely a duplicate.
